AutoMat and Initiative 0 have jointly launched Call Zero. Under the subtitle No More Deaths in Traffic, it aims to urge Prague’s City Assembly and municipal officials to stop ignoring the fact that the most vulnerable road users—pedestrians and people on bicycles—are the least protected. The initiative calls for change that would lead to a clean zero when it comes to the number of people killed in traffic collisions. International experience shows that this goal can be achieved primarily through the adoption of a long-term strategy focused on implementing safe infrastructure, along with systematic investments in safety improvements to public space. Over the coming year, we will be calling on political parties to include the goal of zero fatalities among their program priorities for the 2026 Prague City Assembly elections. You, too, can add your signature in support.
We began the year with our regular analysis of cyclist traffic accidents in Prague for 2024. As part of the scoping procedure, we submitted our comments on the updated EIA opinion for the completion of Prague’s City Ring Road. We pointed out major shortcomings in the current documentation and proposed 16 specific changes to ensure that the impacts of the project are assessed responsibly and in line with the realities of the 21st century. Our article also opened up a topic that has so far been largely overlooked in Czechia—transport poverty—and helped spark a debate about this rarely discussed but serious issue, which is also linked to the planned introduction of ETS 2 emissions allowances. We contributed to the creation of new contraflow cycling lanes in Prague 6 and on Jungmannova Street in Prague 1. We prepared analyses of cyclist behavior and proposed appropriate measures for the areas around Mánes Bridge, Jan Palach Square, and the intersection near the Eden shopping center. Thanks in part to our objections, the latest version of Prague’s new zoning plan has significantly improved the position of public and cycling transport. On the other hand, continued conservative support for cars and gaps in the protection of green spaces and existing development forced AutoMat to resubmit a number of objections originally filed in 2022.
As part of the Central European CEAML project, we devoted intensive attention to the topic of low-emission zones. In cooperation with colleagues from Slovakia and Hungary, we described the relevant legislation and prepared an analysis of the benefits of low-emission zones and the possibilities for their implementation. For experts, as well as representatives of cities and municipalities, we also organized an informational meeting on the topic and published a guide entitled A Comprehensive Framework for Introducing Low-Emission Zones (LEZs) in the Urban Environment of the Czech Republic.
We submitted comments opposing the ban on cycling on one of Prostějov’s major urban streets, Plumlovská Street, and proposed several measures that could help resolve the situation. We also pointed out that the redesign of the intersection above the National Museum contradicts the City of Prague’s strategic documents and fails to deliver the necessary traffic calming or ensure the safety of all road users. Within a working group and subsequently during the interministerial consultation process, we submitted comments on the draft updated Building Regulation Decree, calling for a clear definition of bicycle parking. In September, we carried out an evaluation of traffic volumes ten years after the opening of the Blanka Tunnel. We found that induced traffic growth was particularly intense in the first years following the tunnel’s opening. We also assessed the implementation of accompanying measures that the city could have introduced alongside the start of tunnel operations.
In October, on the occasion of this year’s European Sustainable Development Week (ESDW), we organized three seminars for Charles University focused on sustainable mobility, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, and urban development, as well as a cycling tour for students around Prague. We also organized educational cycling tours in cooperation with Prague 6 and the company Patagonia.
We organized another edition of the MĚSTEM film showcase, this time in a new one-evening format featuring a screening of the Czech documentary Status Quo, a workshop on cargo bikes in cities, and a discussion. On the occasion of Children’s Day and on the eve of World Bicycle Day, we organized the fifth Prague World Bicycle Ride together with the UN office. Around 700 cyclists set off on a route from Strašnická metro station to Kampus Hybernská, where a rich accompanying program was prepared. The event also included a remembrance of the cyclist Aňa, who died in a traffic collision at the intersection near Eden.
We published revised infographics building on the set released in 2019. The topics include contraflow cycling, interactions between cyclists and pedestrians, on-street measures (cycle lanes), and cycling on tram tracks. We also updated our cycling etiquette guide and published an extensive Review of Parking Policies in Cities Around the World.

After nearly a year of revising our educational program, we headed out into the field on the second weekend in April to test the new elements in the area around Křesomyslova Elementary School in Prague’s Nusle district. This is where the first AutoMat educational walk from the new Save the City edition — A Toolkit for Interactive Education — took place.
Throughout the year, we continued to further develop the program and tested it several more times with children of different age groups. In total, we reached 130 children at five different schools. In the autumn, we brought activities from the Toolkit to two Zažít město jinak locations. Based on the experience gathered, we prepared a complete overview of the programs on our website so that schools in Prague and beyond will be able to order them starting in 2026. Towards the end of the year, we also began preparing a Toolkit for older pupils and secondary school students.
Pokud jste to nestihli, můžete jej zakoupit v našem benefičním e-shopu.
As part of the Save the City program, a range of educational tools and materials was created. These are available on our website and make it easy for anyone to organize a similar walk on their own. During the walks, cards featuring urban elements became particularly popular; we arranged them into an original quartet card game. At the end of the year, we also released the original Experience the City quartet. The cards serve as an educational tool for exploring the city and feeling confident while moving through it. In the autumn, we launched a fundraising campaign on the crowdfunding platform darujme.cz to support the production and distribution of the cards wherever they are needed. Supporters were able to order a nice and useful Christmas gift. If you missed it, you can still purchase the game in our beneficial e-shop.

Between January 13 and 19, the 7th edition of the January Challenge Bike to Work, Walk or Jog took place, with nearly 1,500 brave participants from across the country. Together, they logged 18,945.7 km by bike and 6,184.3 km on foot, across 2,241 cycling trips and 1,645 walking trips. In total, they saved 3.3 tonnes of CO₂.
The main challenge—the May Challenge—was launched for the fifteenth time, this year together with a new and improved system for participants. The visual design of this year’s edition was created by Markéta Černá, who developed her distinctive “little creatures” for the theme The Path to Balance. These appeared not only on the event T-shirt, but also in CycloNews, graphic and promotional materials, including billboards. Throughout the entire month of May, more than 23,000 people from 56 cities and around 1,800 companies commuted to and from work with us, mostly using sustainable modes of transport. Together, they logged nearly 4.3 million sustainably traveled kilometers in the Bike to Work system and saved 681 tonnes of CO₂. We kicked off the month of human-powered travel with a Cycling Breakfast with the Minister of Transport, Martin Kupka, and concluded symbolically with the World Bicycle Ride. In all participating cities, countless cycling breakfasts, cycling snacks, bike rides, and final celebration events with prize draws from challenge partners took place. This year’s national Cycle-Friendly Employer was LAPP Czech Republic, s.r.o. from Otrokovice; the Cycle-Friendly City was Pardubice; and the Cycling Newcomer award went to Jihlava.
The September Challenge did not take place this year due to limited IT capacity, as our team focused on finalizing the new Bike to Work system.

For the twentieth time, hundreds of streets across Czechia came alive in September through neighborhood street festivals unlike any other in Central Europe. This year, under the theme The Power of Communities, public space was celebrated in nearly 160 locations (50 of them participating for the first time), thanks to volunteer organizers. Many events drew attention to long-standing local issues such as excessive car traffic, while others focused on positive and enjoyable uses of public space in the spirit of this year’s theme. The festivals attracted more than 67,000 visitors of all ages, and the total area of temporarily reclaimed public space exceeded 185,000 m². In two locations in Prague 6, AutoMat’s education team tested its new Save the City educational programs. The events generated 1,558 media mentions and once again took place as part of European Mobility Week, under the patronage of the Mayor of Prague and the mayors of individual city districts. In December, to mark the 20th anniversary of the festivals, we organized the exhibition Take Back Your Street at Kobka 17 in the Smíchov riverbank area.
