Hundreds of people cycled through Prague as part of the AutoMat World Cycle Ride, drawing attention to the need for safe infrastructure

Hundreds of people – children, parents, ambassadors, regular city cyclists and those who are otherwise rather afraid of cycling – decided to celebrate the bicycle as a sustainable, practical and free means of transport on Sunday, June 1. The fifth Prague World Cycle Ride, organized by the AutoMat association, and the subsequent accompanying program in the Hybernská Kampus, took place on the occasion of Children’s Day and on the eve of World Bicycle Day proclaimed by the UN.

About 700 cyclists set off on the route from the start at the Strašnická metro station and rode through Vršovice, Nusle and the Severojizní magistrála to the Hybernská campus, where a rich program was prepared for all generations.

The main theme of this year’s cycle ride was the safety of children and youth in urban traffic. While passing through the so-called Zone of Silence, the cycle ride honored the memory of a young cyclist who tragically died under the wheels of a truck here in the fall. Her death is followed by the Challenge 0, which was prepared by the independent Initiative 0 together with the AutoMat association and demands that politicians take responsibility for accidents involving vulnerable road users.

The accompanying program at Hybernská offered, for example, a debate on safe movement around the city, which was recorded as a special episode of the Podhoubí program for Radio Wave, a lecture by AutoMat with practical tips for safe driving in the city, a concert by the band White Fruit Honey, workshops and competitions for children. The event also included a presentation of the CYCLE UP! project. and other event partners.
