“The World Bicycle Ride is a reminder that the bicycle is not just a means of transport – it is a tool for change. Change that gives cities a chance to be safer, fairer and more accessible even for the most vulnerable,” says Michal Kalina, head of the Sustainable Urbanism Laboratory at AutoMat.
The cycle ride is intended for the general public – individuals, families with children, and novice cyclists – and its goal is not only to celebrate sustainable transport, but also to appeal for cycling infrastructure to be perceived as an essential part of a modern city.
This year, the event will also commemorate recent tragic accidents involving people on bicycles and call for greater protection of vulnerable groups on the roads. The cycle ride will pass through the so-called Zone of Silence, which will be symbolically created near Prague’s Eden, where a young woman on a bicycle died under the wheels of a truck in the fall of 2024. “The memorial event is followed by the launch of Challenge 0, which reminds us that Prague still lags behind the statistics and standards of safe infrastructure, as we know from other European metropolises,” says one of its organizers, Robin Bureš. The first opportunity to register for this challenge will be as part of the accompanying program of the World Bicycle Ride.

The event is co-organized by the UN Information Centre in Prague and under the auspices of the Deputy Mayor of Prague for Transport. 12 foreign embassies, the Goethe-Institut Czech Republic with the CYCLE UP! project, and other organizations focused on sustainable mobility have pledged to participate. The project was financially supported by the City of Prague.
This is a purely apolitical and at the same time respectful event. We therefore ask participants not to disrupt its course by promoting ideologies, political opinions, parties, and movements, or by supporting any of the parties in ongoing war conflicts. At the same time, we ask them to strictly comply with the Rules of Bike Rides, the instructions of the organizers, and the Czech Police. Participants who do not respect these instructions may be excluded from participating in the event.
