AutoMat Achievements
- Since 2005, we have been coordinating the biggest celebrations of neighbors and public space in the Czech Republic Zažít město jinak. In 2020, they appeared in almost 100 places in Prague and in 31 other cities.
- We are organizing a motivational nationwide Bike to Work Challenge. Despite the pandemic, almost 16,000 cyclists, walkers and runners from almost 3,000 companies and institutions in 48 cities took part in the tenth edition in 2020, who theoretically saved almost 500 tons of CO2.
- Based on the anonymized traffic data of the challenge participants, revisions of the cycle infrastructure for specific cities
- and regions are created.
- We help improve the conditions of “cycling employees” – we reward exemplary Cycling Employers and Cycling Cities of the Year.
- We arranged an excursion to Denmark for the representatives of the four Cycling Cities of 2019 to get inspiration for solving public space and (cycling) infrastructure.
- We started organizing the only film festival of its kind in our country – a showcase of films about sustainable mobility and urbanism called Městem (2019).
- Over 10,000 children have already gone through our educational projects (from 2019 they bear the collective name Generation U).
- The Supreme Administrative Court found us in the right (2019) in the lawsuit against the cancellation of some cycle routes in Karlín.
- After winning the AutoMat vs. Praha 1 court case, cyclists can legally ride in the center of Prague again. We made a protest video with the decent cyclist Vašek, which won the 1st prize in the Public Benefit Spot category at the Donor Forum Awards 2018. Our petition against the ban was signed by 5,000 people.
- We were at the birth of the information and assistance portal about urban cycling in Prague by Bike, including its cycle map and route finder.
In cooperation with Prague on a bike and the GRADA publishing house, we published a guide to urban cycling, Městem na kole (2018). - As part of the People’s School of Urban Cycling project, we organized a series of lectures for the professional public and schools on the topic of cycling safety and designing quality cycling infrastructure. We also published six original illustrated infographics on urban infrastructure (2018).
- We organized the international conference Cycling in hilly cities, where representatives of the cities of Bern, Lisbon and Vienna shared their experiences (2018).
- Together with the Forum of Prague Senators and the Arnika association, we organized a seminar on Practical experience in negotiations with developers (2019)
- During six Saturdays in 2013, with the Nábřeží žije event, we turned the eternally congested Smetana embankment into a pedestrian corso with a cultural program.
- Since 2004, we have been attracting the attention of the media to the topic of urban bicycle transport with the help of large bicycle rides. The biggest event at the moment is the World Bicycle Day in June.
- We enforced the modification of the confusing intersection on the Kapitán Jaroš embankment, where AutoMat founder Jan Bouchal (2012) did not survive a collision with a car.
- We published and distributed the first Green Map of Prague showing (un)friendly public space, traffic congestion or selected businesses. The map belonged to the worldwide network Green Map (2010).
- We have translated the Cycling Fallacies website into Czech, which refutes the most common myths about cycling (2019).
- The documentary auto*mat (2009) by the director and founder of AutoMat, Martin Mareček, was awarded as the best Czech documentary of the decade at the festival in Jihlava in 2010. The film depicts the first years of the initiative and at the same time introduced the topic of quality of life in the city, sustainable transport and active citizenship to the general public. With its content, it provoked many discussions and reactions and caused a significant increase in interest not only in AutoMat, but also in the quality of life in the city in general (trailer).
