World Bike Ride to Take Over Prague on 31 May: “Connected by Cycling” Highlights the Right to Safe and Sustainable Mobility

The joint World Cycling Ride on Sunday, 31 May, will celebrate the bicycle as the transport mode of the future. To mark World Bicycle Day, the AutoMat association aims to bring together people with different views and experiences of cycling in the city. Under the slogan “Connected by Cycling,” the event will highlight the importance of safe infrastructure, high-quality public space and sustainable mobility in general. The UN office in Czechia will also join the ride as a co-organiser, along with a number of embassies from around the world.

The World Bike Ride will set off at 2 p.m. from Bike Jesus on Štvanice Island. The approximately 10-kilometre route will run through central Prague and is suitable for less experienced cyclists and families with children. The exact route, including any detours, will be published in the week before the event.

“The aim of the World Cycling Ride is to show that cycling can be a natural part of urban transport and that safe conditions for cycling benefit everyone. This year, we also want to create space for mutual understanding and a positive discussion about public space and transport in the city,” says Michal Kalina, Head of the Sustainable Urbanism Lab at the organising association AutoMat.

The UN has long called on member states to support cycling and incorporate it into transport policies. The European Declaration on Cycling likewise describes cycling as one of the most accessible, healthy and sustainable forms of transport.

“A bicycle is not just a sport or leisure activity. In cities, it is an accessible and efficient means of transport with a positive impact on health, the climate and the quality of public space. We are pleased that the Prague World Cycling Ride regularly attracts both the general public and diplomats from different parts of the world,” says Michal Broža, Head of the UN Information Centre in Prague.

After the peloton returns to Štvanice Island, a programme of accompanying events will follow. These will include a public discussion on transport and the future of urban space. Speakers will include artist Vladimír 518, journalist Táňa Zabloudilová, Yvette Vašourková of CCEA MOBA, and transport consultant Martin Marek. The discussion will be moderated by Pavel Šebesta and Karolína Faberová from the Psycho podcast on Radio Wave. This will be followed by a presentation by AutoMat representatives on measuring bicycle traffic and accident rates. A children’s corner with transport experiments will be available for younger visitors. Visitors will also be able to have their bicycles checked at Bike Kitchen Praha, while DJ Gadjo.cz will provide the musical accompaniment.

The World Cycling Ride is organised by AutoMat in cooperation with the City of Prague, Prague’s municipal districts and the traffic police. The event is co-organised by the UN in Czechia and supported by a number of diplomatic missions, not only from European countries. The project is financially supported by the City of Prague.
