Místo upřesníme. Tématem bude rozvoj cyklistické infrastruktury v Praze v roce 2024 a následujících, diskuse o možnostech města a zapojení veřejnosti.
10 km a nebude do kopce.

Současná pozice cyklistiky v Praze – i přes viditelné zlepšení – není stále ideální: rostoucí počet cyklistů a cyklistek v ulicích bohužel neznamená vyšší odhodlání veřejnosti k pro-cyklistické aktivizaci. Cyklistická opatření se naopak stávají předmětem mediálních válek referujících o dopravních svobodách jednotlivců. To chceme změnit.

World Bicycle Day has been declared by the United Nations since 2018, calling on its member states to celebrate and support cycling. The AutoMat association’s bike ride will offer city residents the opportunity to try out what it’s like to ride on the road like most, even if only for tens of minutes. Cycling is also suitable for families with children, at a pace and on an undemanding route of approx. 10 km.
The world cycling race starts in Riegrovy sady and at the finish line on the island of Štvanice, a rich accompanying program is prepared for the participants from 4 p.m. In addition to activities for children, you can look forward to a discussion on the reconstruction of the North-South Highway, a presentation of research into the perception of cycling infrastructure, and a musical production by Bíťák Aleš and Folkáč Johy.
„The World Cycling Day is a great opportunity to remind the importance of the bicycle for urban transport. It is rising mainly in connection with people’s health, air pollution and climate change. Therefore, it is necessary to build a safe infrastructure for bicycles and pedestrians, which will attract people who are otherwise afraid of traffic,“ says Michal Kalina from AutoMat.
Cycling is also suitable for children. The route will be a maximum of 10 km and will not be uphill. Cycling is also an opportunity to point out the importance of safe conditions for the movement of children in our cities.

The current position of cycling in Prague – despite the visible improvement – is still not ideal: the increasing number of male and female cyclists on the streets unfortunately does not mean a greater public commitment to pro-cycling activation. Cycling measures, on the other hand, become the subject of media wars reporting on the freedom of transport of individuals. We want to change that. The first step is our Advocacy Manual for better transport in the city, which we published in January 2022.
The potential of using a bicycle in cities has been steadily increasing in recent years (and especially in the Western world) and the bicycle is becoming a trend for a healthy and sustainable urban lifestyle. We want to remind you that the attractiveness, joy and benefit of cycling depends on political support and the resulting quality, density and safety of cycling infrastructure. In addition, the support of cycling is part of the Sustainable Development Goals (so-called SDG’s) of the United Nations, to which many cities subscribe. We will demonstrate this in an allegorical and carnival-style manner as we pass through the city.
The importance of the bicycle was also emphasized during the covid-19 pandemic and after it: for example, in Prague, the number of cyclists increased by approximately 67% in the first wave of the pandemic in official censuses, and even by more than 100% in the second wave. In addition to the fight against climate change and pollution, the bicycle is also an essential tool for the fight against covid.
Many cities around the world took covid-19 as a challenge and started to prefer urban cycling very quickly and productively. Paris, London, Brussels, Milan, Berlin, Vienna, Ljubljana, Tirana, Bogota or Santiago de Chile, all of these cities have, in recent years, proceeded to radically transform their transport preferences in favor of a healthy life in the city. Unfortunately, this did not happen in Prague, despite the fact that our association already in May 2020 offered elected representatives a comprehensive and inspiring survey of current measures and concepts in other world capitals.
