A Memorial Bike Ride on Wednesday Evening Will Honour a Cyclist’s Memory and Highlight the Right to Move Safely Around the City

On Thursday, June 4, a cyclist and a bus collided in Prague’s Krč district. The cyclist, a man, tragically lost his life. He is already the ninth person cycling to have died on Prague’s roads during the current municipal term. On Wednesday, June 10, Critical Mass Prague, together with Bike Kitchen Prague and the AutoMat association, announced a memorial bike ride to the site of the fatal crash.

The memorial ride will start at 7:00 p.m. near the Congress Centre in Vyšehrad. Shortly before 8:00 p.m., participants will light candles at the site of the newly installed ghost bike on Vídeňská Street. They will commemorate not only this cyclist, but everyone who has lost their life while cycling in Prague.

“The aim is to create a genuine critical mass of people who care about what our streets look like,” says Anežka Velinská of Critical Mass Prague. “We will be visible, we will be heard. And we will remind people that safe streets are not a privilege, but a right,” the cycling collective says.

“Cities such as Oslo and Helsinki have already achieved Vision Zero, with the goal of preventing deaths in traffic. London has also recently committed to the same vision. Prague, however, is still falling behind and failing to protect its residents — especially those who do not travel around the city by car. The city’s refusal to provide adequate funding for the development of safe and sustainable transport is only making the situation worse,” adds Anna Kociánová of AutoMat.

Following the tragic death of a young cyclist under the wheels of a lorry in autumn 2024, the independent Initiative 0 was established. It seeks to bring the perspective of more vulnerable road users into public debate — people cycling, children, older people, and people with physical or mental disabilities. More than 2,500 people have already signed its Zero Call, calling for zero traffic fatalities.

The organisers invite everyone who cares about safer streets to join the memorial bike ride. Every further loss of life in traffic is a reminder that safety must be one of the main priorities in how the city is planned and managed.

19:00 — Meeting point (Vyšehrad, near the Congress Centre)

19:15–19:20 — Departure towards the crash site

19:45–20:00 — Memorial ceremony at the crash site
