The UN Publishes Definitions for Cycling Infrastructure

The publication presents a set of harmonised definitions for cycling infrastructure developed by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) through its Group of Experts on the Cycling Infrastructure Module (2022–2024).

Drawing on recent developments across UNECE member countries, the expert group identified significant changes in cycling practices, infrastructure types, traffic signage and road regulations. In response, it developed a set of standardised definitions intended for broad international use.

The definitions cover both linear infrastructure, including:

• cycle tracks,
• greenways,
• cycle lanes,
• sharrows (shared-lane markings),
• mixed-traffic roads,
• cycle streets,
• contraflow cycling streets,
• bus-and-cycle lanes,
• cycle route networks,

as well as non-linear infrastructure, including:

• cycle crossings,
• grade-separated crossings,
• advanced stop lines for cyclists,
• two-stage turn facilities,
• bicycle parking,
• cyclist exemptions at signalised intersections.

Each definition is accompanied by an explanatory note detailing its source, examples of practical application, and relevant road signage under the Vienna Convention on Road Signs and Signals or national regulations. To improve clarity, the publication also includes illustrative images of traffic signs and infrastructure types.
