{"id":43949,"date":"2026-02-19T10:58:36","date_gmt":"2026-02-19T09:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/auto-mat.cz\/43949\/obyvatelstvo-bostonu-chtelo-vice-cyklostezek-ted-je-maji-a-doprava-ve-meste-se-zklidnila"},"modified":"2026-04-27T10:58:50","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T08:58:50","slug":"obyvatelstvo-bostonu-chtelo-vice-cyklostezek-ted-je-maji-a-doprava-ve-meste-se-zklidnila","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/auto-mat.cz\/en\/43949\/obyvatelstvo-bostonu-chtelo-vice-cyklostezek-ted-je-maji-a-doprava-ve-meste-se-zklidnila","title":{"rendered":"Residents of Boston wanted more bike lanes: now they have them, and traffic in the city has calmed down"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The Better Bike Lanes project in the metropolitan area of Boston led to a significant increase in the number of bike trips, along with a slight decrease in the number of motor vehicles on the roads.<\/h4>\n<p>The changes, implemented between 2023 and 2024, are described in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/file\/2025\/11\/Better%20Bike%20Lanes%20Fall%202025%20Eval%20Web%20Version.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the city of Boston.<\/p>\n<p>The installation of protected bike lanes across the city was part of the election campaign of Michelle Wu, aimed at responding to residents\u2019 demand for better cycling infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>By autumn 2024, a large portion of the infrastructure had been completed, including bike lanes, cycle paths, and new crossings. The city then conducted a study to verify whether the demand for these improvements was based on real usage.<\/p>\n<h4>What do the numbers say?<\/h4>\n<p>In some areas, the increase was rather modest. For example, on South Street in the Brighton neighborhood, about 16 more cyclists per day were recorded, representing a 22% increase compared to the period before the bike lanes were built. Elsewhere, however, the results were more striking.<\/p>\n<p>On Boylston Street in the Back Bay district, the number of recorded daily cycling trips increased by 83%\u2014from 615 to 1,127 after the bike lanes were installed. The lane on Boylston Street is protected by metal bollards that prevent drivers from blocking it while searching for parking.<\/p>\n<p>In the city center, on Milk Street, nearly 200 more cyclists were recorded on the new one-way bike lane compared to before its construction, when cyclists had to ride in lanes shared with cars.<\/p>\n<p>Western Avenue, in sections running through Allston and Brighton, saw more than 200 additional cyclists, representing a 51% increase in average daily bike traffic.<\/p>\n<p>But how many of these cyclists actually left their cars at home, and how many didn\u2019t own a car in the first place? The data showed a slight decline in car traffic\u2014near Fairfield Street, average traffic volumes dropped by 9% between September 2022 and September 2024, and near Arlington Street by as much as 14%.<\/p>\n<h4>More mobility for everyone<\/h4>\n<p>Tiffany Cogell, executive director of the Boston Cyclists\u2019 Union, <a href=\"https:\/\/mass.streetsblog.org\/2025\/12\/05\/boston-data-show-streets-with-new-bike-lanes-successfully-shift-traffic-from-cars-to-bikes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> Mass Street Blog that the new bike lanes \u201creduce crashes, increase predictability, and expand mobility options without increasing congestion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cProtected cycling infrastructure works,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is exactly the kind of data-driven decision-making our city needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>You can also support safer streets by joining the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vizenula.cz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Call Zero<\/a> initiative.
